ARMALKYD® is a range of alkyd-modified coatings for industrial and protective applications, providing effective corrosion protection of metal structures in moderately aggressive environments. The line includes alkyd-phenolic primers for fundamental anticorrosion protection, alkyd-acrylic direct-to-metal (DTM) coatings and alkyd-acrylic topcoats for decorative finishing. Key Features of Alkyd Coatings

  • Excellent Decorative Properties — Alkyd coatings provide good gloss and uniform color, are easy to apply, and form a smooth, even film.

  • Accessibility and Ease of Use — Suitable for a wide range of metal and wood surfaces, making them convenient for general-purpose applications.

Differences Compared to Acrylic-Polyurethane Coatings:

  • Lower resistance to UV radiation and atmospheric exposure.

  • Limited durability and aesthetic stability under harsh industrial or chemical conditions.

  • Acrylic-polyurethane coatings offer superior chemical resistance, longer service life, and better retention of color and gloss.

  • Alkyd coatings are generally not repairable, unlike acrylic-polyurethane systems.

Differences Compared to Epoxy Coatings:

  • Reduced corrosion and chemical resistance.

  • Epoxy coatings are better suited for heavy-duty industrial protection and as a barrier layer, especially when used as part of a multi-layer coating system.

Fast-Drying Primer

  • A single-component alkyd primer designed for initial protection of metal surfaces. Provides reliable corrosion protection, fast drying to accelerate production cycles, and strong adhesion to steel and properly prepared metal substrates, ensuring the durability of subsequent coating layers. Example: ARMALKYD® Primer 021.

Direct-to-Metal (DTM) Primer-Enamel

  • A versatile single-component “primer + enamel” system that can be applied directly to metal without intermediate layers. Combines corrosion protection with decorative finishing, allowing fast project startup and ease of use on-site. Can serve as a standalone protective-decorative layer or in combination with Primer 021. Example: ARMALKYD® DTM 123.

Alkyd Topcoat

  • Single-component alkyd enamel suitable for both interior and exterior applications. Features fast drying and provides decorative and protective finishing. Example: ARMALKYD® Topcoat 121.

Surface Preparation

  • Remove rust, dirt, and grease before application. A clean, smooth surface ensures maximum coating performance and longevity.

Coating Thickness and Application

  • Apply primers and DTM primer-enamels in one or two coats, depending on substrate and project requirements. Finish topcoats are optimally applied in two layers to achieve even coverage and maximum durability.

Layer Compatibility

  • Alkyd primers should only be overcoated with alkyd topcoats. Using two-component systems such as epoxy or acrylic-polyurethane topcoats over alkyds can cause partial dissolution and, due to differing physical and mechanical properties, compromise intercoat adhesion. This must be considered when designing the coating system.
